The second week of the Ohio High School Playoffs take place tonight and tomorrow night, as the 96 surviving playoff teams square off in 48 exciting matchups played at neutral sites all across the Buckeye State.
Here are the 10 games against area teams this weekend.
DIVISION I (Saturday @ 7PM)
(Region 3)- both rematches of OCC division games
# 4 Upper Arlington Golden Bears (9-2) vs. # 1 Hilliard Davidson Wildcats (10-0)- at St. Francis DeSales H.S.
# 6 Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions (9-2) vs. # 2 Pickerington Central Tigers [8-2)- at Ohio Wesleyan University's Selby Field
The # 1 and # 2 teams won the regular season matchups against their Saturday opponents pretty handily, and are expected to do so again.
Picks: Hilliard Davidson and Pick Central, to set up that exciting rematch next Saturday
DIVISION II (Friday @ 7:30PM)
(Region 7)
# 4 Big Walnut Golden Eagles (9-2) vs. # 1 Marion-Franklin Red Devils (11-0)- at Ohio Wesleyan University's Selby Field
# 3 Dresden Tri-Valley Scotties vs. # 2 New Albany Eagles (both 9-2)- at Gahanna Lincoln H.S.
Marion-Franklin is at a disadvantage against Big Walnut, having learned that first-hand last year in this round. Marion-Franklin barely beat Brookhaven (twice), Canal Winchester, and Dublin Scioto; while Big Walnut played Olentangy Orange, New Albany, Westerville Central, and Hilliard Bradley- all good quality teams in 2011.

DIVISION III (Friday @ 7:30PM)

This will be as good as it gets, and probably Alder's toughest test (in a year where they beat Clinton-Massie and Watterson, you can only get tougher, right?) this year in an unbeaten Jackson team that will never give up.

DIVISION IV (Saturday at 7PM)
(Region 14)
# 3 Bishop Hartley Hawks (10-0) vs. # 2 Pemberville Eastwood Eagles (11-0)- at Ashland H.S.
The defending D-IV State Champs Hawks take their offensive and defensive attack on the road to Ashland to play against unbeaten Eastwood, from the Toledo area, in what could be the Hawks' toughest test since Kettering Alter in the D-IV State Semifinals last year. The winner of this game may face off against the explosive offensive attack of Kenton.

# 6 Ironton Tigers (7-4) vs. # 2 Johnstown-Monroe Johnnies (11-0)- at Hamilton Township H.S.
This could have upset pick all over it, as the Tigers could claw their way to the Regional Finals.

# 6 West Jefferson Roughriders (9-2) vs. # 2 Marion Pleasant Trojans (11-0)- at Hilliard Bradley H.S.
The Trojans hung almost 80 on Cincinnati Summit Country Day last week, things will get tough for them in what is practically a home game for West Jeff, which is only minutes away from where the game will be played.

2011 Central Ohio H.S. Football- This is It- Week # 10
I can't believe that this is the end of the high school football season. Where have the last ten weeks gone? On Sunday, 192 high schools from across the state will receive their Golden Tickets, courtesy of the OHSAA when the playoff pairings are officially announced.

You can't script this any better. Winner takes all. Loser calls it a season. Winner gets in the playoffs. Loser calls it a season. Region 19 is so packed with talent, that there could be two 9-1 schools not make the final cut on Sunday. Grandview is looking for their first 10-0 season in School History, while Liberty Union is looking to win and hopefully get into the playoffs. This will be an interesting match.

RIVALRY GAME OF THE WEEK # 1 (The Battle of the Bishops):
Bishop Hartley Hawks [8-0) at Bishop Ready Silver Knights (4-5)- at Dublin Scioto
This is the South Columbus version of the Watterson-DeSales rivalry. The Hawks are looking for their first-ever perfect regular season, just one year after winning it all. The Knights, who are already out of the playoff hunt, are looking to play spoiler. But, they'll have issues stopping the Hawks' run, which has been non-stoppable all year.

The staunch Davidson defense will make the Panthers pay for their cake schedule by knocking them out of the playoffs in the 4th Annual Battle of Hilliard.

RIVALRY GAME OF THE WEEK # 6 (The Battle of Worthington):
Thomas (Worthington) Cardinals at (Worthington) Kilbourne Wolves (both 3-6, 2-4)
Kilbourne has won all three meetings against Thomas, whose football program never recovered from the arrival of Kilbourne in 1991.

OTHER "WIN OR GO HOME" GAMES THIS WEEK:

Last week, the Golden Bears seven-game win streak was snapped as they ran into a "brick wall" known as the Hilliard Davidson defense. It doesn't get any better as they host Coffman.

Brookhaven Bearcats (6-3, 5-1) at Mifflin Punchers [8-1, 5-1)
The Punchers hold on to the eighth and final slot in Region 7, which has a few teams waiting in the wings, including the team that Punchers coach Gregg Miller coached for 17 years- the Brookhaven Bearcats. Could this be the final Brookhaven game ever? Can the Bearcats go all the way to Easton and punch Mifflin out of the playoffs? Can Mifflin beat a team above .500 for the first time this season?

Westerville Central Warhawks (7-2, 4-2) at Dublin Jerome Celtics (4-5, 4-2)
The Warhawks were upset by Olentangy Liberty last week, and need to win at Jerome to make their first-ever playoff appearance in the school's nine-year history. The Celtics have already upset another Westerville school (South, 34-31 in overtime) this season, and would like to complete a season sweep of the Westerville City School district.
Pick: Dublin Jerome (Upset Pick)
Groveport Madison Cruisers (3-6, 1-5) at Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions (7-2, 5-1)
Last year, Gahanna knocked Groveport out of the playoffs in Week 10. This year, the Cruisers are looking for a little deja vu. However, Gahanna is a stronger team, having quality wins over Pickerington North, Reynoldsburg, and playoff-bound DeSales.

Granville Blue Aces [8-1, 6-0) at Columbus Academy Vikings (5-4, 3-3)
The Blue Aces, currently 10th in Region 11, are looking for a win, plus a little help to get into the playoff race. The Blue Aces will keep up their part of the bargain, but will need fate to intervene.

West Jefferson Roughriders (7-2, 4-2) at Berne Union Rockets (2-7, 2-4)
Pick: West Jefferson
Circleville Tigers (2-7, 2-4) at Canal Winchester Indians (6-3, 4-2)
The Indians need a win badly to get into the playoffs, plus help from the Mifflin-Brookhaven game, among contests.

Utica Redskins (2-7, 1-5) at Centerburg Trojans (7-2, 4-2)

Westerville South Wildcats (6-3, 5-1) at Olentangy Liberty Patriots (5-4, 4-2)
Last year, Liberty upset playoff-bound South at South, and last week, Liberty upset Westerville Central. The Patriots (like Dublin Jerome) are looking to go 3-0 against the city of Westerville this season. But, the Wildcats have too much power on their side.

Grove City Greyhounds (3-6, 2-4) at Pickerington North Panthers (7-2, 4-2)

Independence 76ers (5-4, 3-3) at Walnut Ridge Scots (4-5, 4-2)
It is a miracle that the Sixers are still in the playoff hunt, but they are, ranked 11th in Region 10, ahead of last year's D-III champs, Watterson.

Bishop Watterson Golden Eagles (3-6) at Jonathan Alder Pioneers (9-0)
There will be a new Division III State Champion, because the Eagles will be officially grounded by Alder. Flashback to last week, when the Eagles lost to St. Charles for the first time in 11 years, putting another nail in the Eagles' disappointing season. The playoff-bound Pioneers will give the Eagles the final knockout punch.

Could this be the final Brookhaven game ever? Can the Bearcats go all the way to Easton and punch Mifflin out of the playoffs? Can Mifflin beat a team above .500 for the first time this season?

The Warhawks were upset by Olentangy Liberty last week, and need to win at Jerome to make their first-ever playoff appearance in the school's nine-year history. The Celtics have already upset another Westerville school (South, 34-31 in overtime) this season, and would like to complete a season sweep of the Westerville City School district.

Last year, Gahanna knocked Groveport out of the playoffs in Week 10. This year, the Cruisers are looking for a little deja vu. However, Gahanna is a stronger team, having quality wins over Pickerington North, Reynoldsburg, and playoff-bound DeSales.

2011 Central Ohio High School Football: Week 9
Tomorrow night, the penultimate week of high school football takes place for all but 192 football programs in Central Ohio. Teams that are above .500 are inching towards playoff contention, while other schools are winding down seasons were teams fell so short.
Big Games of the Week/Rivalry Games of the Week: Eastmoor Academy Warriors (7-1, 5-0) at Marion-Franklin Red Devils (8-0, 5-0) and Brookhaven Bearcats (6-2, 5-0) at Beechcroft Cougars (7-1, 5-0)
Could this be the final Haven-Croft match? On Tuesday, it was reported that Columbus City Schools is considering closing Brookhaven High School, which would put an end to one of the state's inner-city sports dynasties, winning State Titles in Football, and Boys and Girls Basketball. The Bearcats, in fact, are the ONLY high school in the Columbus City School District to do all that, and win a State Title in Football. This could be a huge loss in the City League, but could other schools (Beechcroft, Mifflin, Northland, Whetstone, East, Linden) in the City League North benefit?

This season has been disappointing for the defending Division III state champs, who lost all but four starters to greener pastures (graduation). But, the Eagles get it done in their home finale.

This could be a long trek across the Scioto for the Bears, because Davidson has pitched four consecutive shutouts, including a defensive game last week against Coffman.

Could this be the final Haven-Croft match? On Tuesday, it was reported that Columbus City Schools is considering closing Brookhaven High School, which would put an end to one of the state's inner-city sports dynasties, winning State Titles in Football, and Boys and Girls Basketball. The Bearcats, in fact, are the ONLY high school in the Columbus City School District to do all that, and win a State Title in Football. This could be a huge loss in the City League, but could other schools (Beechcroft, Mifflin, Northland, Whetstone, East, Linden) in the City League North benefit?

Central Ohio High School Football: Week 8

Big Game of the Week ("Thing Two" at "Thing One"):
Dublin Coffman Shamrocks (7-0, 4-0) at Hilliard Davidson Wildcats (6-0, 4-0)
This is a battle between two neighboring northwest Columbus suburbs. 20 years ago, this match would have been just "Dublin vs. Hilliard", as it was years and years ago. Once again this year, both teams enter this race with a perfect record. However, the loser of this game will need to step up their game in the final two weeks to make it, and both of these schools still have to match up against Upper Arlington in those weeks. This is why Sports Corner dubbed this match "Thing One" vs. "Thing Two", because these two are a one-two punch in the OCC Central Division.

Bishop Watterson Golden Eagles (3-4, 0-0) at St. Francis DeSales Stallions (3-3, 1-0)
This is the "Holy War" of rivalries. For the last 50 years, these two North side Catholic schools have battled it out on the field. Tomorrow night, the loser of this game will see their season end in two weeks after a disappointing season. Both teams need this win desperately. The Stallions have the edge, not just because of the home field advantage, but because Watterson's not the same team that went 13-1 and won the State Title up in Massillon last December (due to graduation).

The last time the Warriors won a game was in the city of Westerville (against Central in 2008). Since then, it's been 32 consecutive Friday nights of agonizing defeat. It is possible that the Warriors losing streak will end in Westerville, where it began, as the Warriors could pull off an upset against a South team that has already lost to struggling teams in Grove City and Dublin Jerome already. Plus, this game has been a rivalry for the last 35 years, so an upset is bound to happen, don't you think?

Bexley Girls Soccer vs. Bishop Hartley Girls Soccer
Sports Corner doesn't do anything outside of H.S. football, due to time constraints, but on Saturday, Sports Corner cites this game because of the off-the-field controversy and the rivalry between the two. In the spring, former Bexley (and now Hartley) girls soccer coach Scott Dempsey's contract was not renewed by the Bexley School District, and so therefore he headed down the street to Hartley. Dempsey's daughter is a senior on the Bexley girls team, which won a State Title two years ago, so this game will be a family affair as well.

Walnut Ridge Scots (3-4, 3-1) at Eastmoor Academy Warriors (6-1, 4-0)
The Scots have been in all of their City League games, upsetting West last week, and coming up short against Marion-Franklin the week before. Tomorrow, they head to Eastmoor Academy to play the Warriors in a game with big implications in the City League South, and for the Warriors, a win could clinch them a playoff spot (they are ranked # 1 in Region 10 in Division III).

New Albany Eagles (5-2, 3-1) at Big Walnut Golden Eagles (6-1, 4-0)
This is a MUST-win for New Albany in this "Battle of the Eagles", as a win over Big Walnut boosts their chances of playing in November after last season's disappointing exit from the playoffs. There is a 100 percent chance that the Eagles win this game, but which Eagles?

Delaware Hayes Pacers (2-5, 1-3) at Hilliard Bradley Jaguars (5-2, 2-2)- The Mike LoParo Bowl
Last year at this game, Bradley coach Mike LoParo was the head coach on the opposite side of the field for Delaware Hayes, where he was the head coach for three seasons. Tomorrow night, LoParo is reunited with his former Pacers, on the opposite side of the field, as the Jaguars head coach.

This will be an interesting OCC Union County rivalry, and probably the last meeting for a while, because of re-alignment in the OCC (Jerome will remain in the Cardinal Division, while Marysville's season next year will get brutal against the three-headed monster- Dublin Coffman, Hilliard Davidson, and Upper Arlington- in the OCC Central).

An upset loss to Walnut Ridge officially proved that the Cowboys were playoff pretenders, and not playoff contenders. Region 7 is very competitive, and the Cowboys missed the lasso. The Red Devils will lasso the Cowboys out of the playoff hunt and the City League South race with a win at Magley Field.

Why is this game even being cited? Both of these schools were on opposite ends of blowout shutouts last week (Westland losing 55-0 at Thomas Worthington; UA romped Central Crossing 76-0, outscoring the Comets 160-6 in their last 2 meetings now). This will be an easy win for the Bears, and they'll need it, because with Thing One (Hilliard Davidson) next week and Thing Two (Dublin Coffman) the week after, that loss to Tri-Valley might come back to haunt UA on Oct. 30.

Bexley Girls Soccer vs. Bishop Hartley Girls Soccer
Sports Corner doesn't do anything outside of H.S. football, due to time constraints, but on Saturday, Sports Corner cites this game because of the off-the-field controversy and the rivalry between the two. In the spring, former Bexley (and now Hartley) girls soccer coach Scott Dempsey's contract was not renewed by the Bexley School District, and so therefore he headed down the street to Hartley. Dempsey's daughter is a senior on the Bexley girls team, which won a State Title two years ago, so this game will be a family affair as well.

Tomorrow, they head to Eastmoor Academy to play the Warriors in a game with big implications in the City League South, and for the Warriors, a win could clinch them a playoff spot (they are ranked # 1 in Region 10 in Division III).

This is a MUST-win for New Albany in this "Battle of the Eagles", as a win over Big Walnut boosts their chances of playing in November after last season's disappointing exit from the playoffs. There is a 100 percent chance that the Eagles win this game, but which Eagles?

Delaware Hayes Pacers (2-5, 1-3) at Hilliard Bradley Jaguars (5-2, 2-2)- The Mike LoParo Bowl
Last year at this game, Bradley coach Mike LoParo was the head coach on the opposite side of the field for Delaware Hayes, where he was the head coach for three seasons. Tomorrow night, LoParo is reunited with his former Pacers, on the opposite side of the field, as the Jaguars head coach.

This will be an interesting OCC Union County rivalry, and probably the last meeting for a while, because of re-alignment in the OCC (Jerome will remain in the Cardinal Division, while Marysville's season next year will get brutal against the three-headed monster- Dublin Coffman, Hilliard Davidson, and Upper Arlington- in the OCC Central).

An upset loss to Walnut Ridge officially proved that the Cowboys were playoff pretenders, and not playoff contenders. Region 7 is very competitive, and the Cowboys missed the lasso. The Red Devils will lasso the Cowboys out of the playoff hunt and the City League South race with a win at Magley Field.

Both of these schools were on opposite ends of blowout shutouts last week (Westland losing 55-0 at Thomas Worthington; UA romped Central Crossing 76-0, outscoring the Comets 160-6 in their last 2 meetings now). This will be an easy win for the Bears, and they'll need it, because with Thing One (Hilliard Davidson) next week and Thing Two (Dublin Coffman) the week after, that loss to Tri-Valley might come back to haunt UA on Oct. 30.

This week is getting bigger, as there are High School Football Matches from Thursday to Saturday this week.
THURSDAY NIGHT GAME:
The Mayor/Headmaster Trophy
Columbus Academy Vikings (4-2, 2-1) at Bexley Lions (4-2, 1-2)
Because of Yom Kippur, this game is being played on Thursday.
This is a big rivalry between these two schools, as they compete for the Mayor (Bexley)/Headmaster (Academy) Trophy. Before moving up to Gahanna in 1968, Columbus Academy was located on the other side of Alum Creek from Bexley on Nelson Road.

Mifflin has had pretty much an easy schedule, playing no one with more than three wins (Watkins Memorial), and off to a 6-0 start. Reality will set in for the Punchers, because the Cougars (Beechcroft) will prey on the undefeated Punchers.

The Cowboys have had a fairly easy ride in the City League, while Walnut Ridge has won three straight- all City League matches, after an 0-3 start. The Cowboys haven't been to the playoffs ever, and it's not going to happen this year, because of their easy wins.

ALL of Harvest Prep's teams are ineligible for postseason play this year, and the Boys Basketball Team will forfeit ALL of its wins from last season. The Cowboys have had a fairly easy ride in the City League, while Walnut Ridge has won three straight- all City League matches, after an 0-3 start. The Cowboys haven't been to the playoffs ever, and it's not going to happen this year, because of their easy wins.

Central Ohio High School Football: Week 3 (2011)
The third week of high school football is upon us. Last week, temperatures for games were around 90 degrees (or warmer). This week, they will be in the 60s.
BIGGEST GAME THIS WEEK:
Marion-Franklin Red Devils at Canal Winchester Indians (both 2-0)
Both schools are on the Southeast side of town. Both are 2-0, and both have been Division II playoff staples, and both meet tomorrow night. The winner of this game still has a shot at a 10-0 record, while the loser will have to settle for 9-1 at best, and in their tough computer region, 9-1 might not be good enough for the playoffs.

UPSET PICK OF THE WEEK:
Olentangy Orange Pioneers (1-1) at Westerville North Warriors (0-2)
The Westerville North Warriors of 2011 are a far cry from the Warriors of the 1980s and 1990s. A far cry. A once proud team in Central Ohio has not been to the playoffs in over 10 years, and are riding currently a 27-game losing streak. The North faithful are tired of the losing, and this may be one of their shots to end the losing this year, as they host nearby Olentangy Orange. Why North could lose their 28th game in a row is that Orange went to the Division II playoffs in 2009 and are coached by Brian Cross, who coached at some of the best football programs (Eastmoor, Grove City, and Canton McKinley) in Ohio. I think North might actually show what the North teams of old had and shock everyone.

St. Francis DeSales Stallions at New Albany Eagles (both 1-1)
Last year, New Albany upset DeSales on a Jimmy Gammill field goal, 13-10. The Stallions are looking to win back-to-back games, while the Eagles, smarting from a loss to Westerville Central last week, want an encore upset of the Stallions.

RIVALRY GAME OF THE WEEK:
The Battle of Hard Road-
Dublin Scioto Irish (0-2) at Worthington Kilbourne Wolves (1-1)
These two schools lie on a road that goes from the Scioto River to the west and to State Route 315 to the east. Some kids live right next to each other. The winner of this game gets a piece of the road their schools lie on as a trophy, probably one of the most coveted trophies of local high school sports. Of course, I'm talking about The 17th Annual Battle of Hard Road, played annually since the opening of Dublin Scioto High School in 1995. Last week, Scioto played Marion-Franklin tough in a loss, while Kilbourne got blown out at home by Solon.

Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions (2-0) at Upper Arlington Golden Bears (1-1)
This is a big perennial suburban rivalry, as it has been for years. To some UA faithful- Thomas Worthington, Hilliard Davidson, and even Bishop Watterson have been rivals of the Golden Bears. Gahanna is right up with them, as these two football programs have been among the most successful in the last 50 years. The Lions are a surprise 2-0, while the Golden Bears are coming off their first win of the year (34-19 win over Springfield at the Herbstreit Classic). The team with the best skill wins.

Olentangy Braves at Big Walnut Golden Eagles (both 1-1)
These two Delaware County rivals square off in this great rivalry. Next year, Olentangy moves to the OCC Capital, which means that this game could be for a league title then, but until then, bragging rights are on the line in this of many rivalries in Delaware County.

Bexley Lions at Hamilton Township Rangers (both 2-0)
Bexley has breezed through its first two opponents- both in Division VI, while Hamilton Township came from behind to beat Chillicothe, and it topped London last week. Bexley's easy start will show down in Obetz.

Walnut Ridge Scots (0-2) at Hilliard Davidson Wildcats (1-0)
Walnut Ridge, after an easy non-league schedule this year, closes out their tougher non-league schedule on the road in Hilliard to play a well-rested Davidson team. This may be over by halftime.

Watkins Memorial Warriors at Mifflin Punchers (both 2-0)
Last year, the Warriors exposed the shortcomings of Mifflin, which caused the Punchers to lose five of their last eight games. This year, could be more of the same.

Dublin Coffman Shamrocks at Massillon Perry Panthers (both 2-0)
This will be a tough test for the Shamrocks as they travel to Stark County to play one of the elite D-I teams in Northeast Ohio.

Northland Vikings (0-2) at Pickerington North Panthers (2-0)
Northland is not the same team that went 8-2 and went to the playoffs last year. Far from it. Pickerington North walloped Watterson at home two weeks ago, and beat Logan last week.

Reynoldsburg lost a close one up in Findlay last week, and want to turn it back around against Logan this week. They might just do that.

The Pacers travel down to Powell to play Olentangy Liberty, who is still looking for their first win of the year.

Westerville Central Warhawks (2-0) at Thomas Worthington Cardinals (1-1)
Westerville Central started off the year with back-to-back upset wins. A win in Worthington could send the Hawks to their best start in the school's nine-year history. Thomas blanked their Clintonville neighbors Whetstone last week, and would love to give Central their first loss of the year.

Whitehall-Yearling Rams at Grandview Heights Bobcats (both 2-0)
Tomorrow night's a big night in Grandview, as the Bobcats host fellow small Columbus suburb Whitehall in a battle of the unbeatens. The Bobcats would like to celebrate a victory before heading down to the Ox Roast down the street.

Central Crossing Comets at Franklin Heights Golden Falcons (both 0-2)
Central Crossing has never won more than three games in the nine years of their program's history. Franklin Heights has seen better days, but none in recent years. If Westerville North wins tomorrow night, Franklin Heights will have the longest losing streak in Central Ohio.

Africentric Early College Nubians (0-2) at Columbus East Tigers (1-1)
East gave Head Coach Lewis Carter his first win in East's home opener as they shut down Columbus South 28-0 (The Bulldogs play Centennial this week. Last year, South snapped Centennial's 34-game losing streak with a 31-7 Stars win). Africentric has been blown out 110-32 in its two losses. East could be 2-1 heading into City League play for the first time since 1999. This is the first meeting between these two schools (East being the oldest school in Columbus), despite the schools being about three miles apart.

Both schools are on the Southeast side of town. Both are 2-0, and both have been Division II playoff staples, and both meet tomorrow night. The winner of this game still has a shot at a 10-0 record, while the loser will have to settle for 9-1 at best, and in their tough computer region, 9-1 might not be good enough for the playoffs.

UPSET PICK OF THE WEEK:
Olentangy Orange Pioneers (1-1) at Westerville North Warriors (0-2)
The Westerville North Warriors of 2011 are a far cry from the Warriors of the 1980s and 1990s. A far cry. A once proud team in Central Ohio has not been to the playoffs in over 10 years, and are riding currently a 27-game losing streak. The North faithful are tired of the losing, and this may be one of their shots to end the losing this year, as they host nearby Olentangy Orange. Why North could lose their 28th game in a row is that Orange went to the Division II playoffs in 2009 and are coached by Brian Cross, who coached at some of the best football programs (Eastmoor, Grove City, and Canton McKinley) in Ohio. I think North might actually show what the North teams of old had and shock everyone.

St. Francis DeSales Stallions at New Albany Eagles (both 1-1)
Last year, New Albany upset DeSales on a Jimmy Gammill field goal, 13-10. The Stallions are looking to win back-to-back games, while the Eagles, smarting from a loss to Westerville Central last week, want an encore upset of the Stallions.

The Battle of Hard Road-
Dublin Scioto Irish (0-2) at Worthington Kilbourne Wolves (1-1)
These two schools lie on a road that goes from the Scioto River to the west and to State Route 315 to the east. Some kids live right next to each other. The winner of this game gets a piece of the road their schools lie on as a trophy, probably one of the most coveted trophies of local high school sports. Of course, I'm talking about The 17th Annual Battle of Hard Road, played annually since the opening of Dublin Scioto High School in 1995. Last week, Scioto played Marion-Franklin tough in a loss, while Kilbourne got blown out at home by Solon.

Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions (2-0) at Upper Arlington Golden Bears (1-1)
This is a big perennial suburban rivalry, as it has been for years. To some UA faithful- Thomas Worthington, Hilliard Davidson, and even Bishop Watterson have been rivals of the Golden Bears. Gahanna is right up with them, as these two football programs have been among the most successful in the last 50 years. The Lions are a surprise 2-0, while the Golden Bears are coming off their first win of the year (34-19 win over Springfield at the Herbstreit Classic). The team with the best skill wins.

Olentangy Braves at Big Walnut Golden Eagles (both 1-1)
These two Delaware County rivals square off in this great rivalry. Next year, Olentangy moves to the OCC Capital, which means that this game could be for a league title then, but until then, bragging rights are on the line in this of many rivalries in Delaware County.

Bexley Lions at Hamilton Township Rangers (both 2-0)
Bexley has breezed through its first two opponents- both in Division VI, while Hamilton Township came from behind to beat Chillicothe, and it topped London last week. Bexley's easy start will show down in Obetz.

Walnut Ridge Scots (0-2) at Hilliard Davidson Wildcats (1-0)
Walnut Ridge, after an easy non-league schedule this year, closes out their tougher non-league schedule on the road in Hilliard to play a well-rested Davidson team. This may be over by halftime.

Watkins Memorial Warriors at Mifflin Punchers (both 2-0)
Last year, the Warriors exposed the shortcomings of Mifflin, which caused the Punchers to lose five of their last eight games. This year, could be more of the same.

This will be a tough test for the Shamrocks as they travel to Stark County to play one of the elite D-I teams in Northeast Ohio.

Central Crossing Comets at Franklin Heights Golden Falcons (both 0-2)
Central Crossing has never won more than three games in the nine years of their program's history. Franklin Heights has seen better days, but none in recent years. If Westerville North wins tomorrow night, Franklin Heights will have the longest losing streak in Central Ohio.

Africentric Early College Nubians (0-2) at Columbus East Tigers (1-1)
East gave Head Coach Lewis Carter his first win in East's home opener as they shut down Columbus South 28-0 (The Bulldogs play Centennial this week. Last year, South snapped Centennial's 34-game losing streak with a 31-7 Stars win). Africentric has been blown out 110-32 in its two losses. East could be 2-1 heading into City League play for the first time since 1999. This is the first meeting between these two schools (East being the oldest school in Columbus), despite the schools being about three miles apart.

2011 High School Football: Week 1
It's back.
After an August of two-a-day practices and scrimmages, those Friday night lights will shine once more in football fields for 715 football teams all across the state of Ohio in six divisions. Central Ohio football is the best kept secret around.
When it comes to Ohio football, there are the Cincinnati/Dayton powerhouses, the Cleveland powerhouses, the Akron/Canton powerhouses, and then the Central Ohio powerhouses.
This blog is about Central Ohio football in the Central Ohio region (Franklin, Delaware, Madison, Pickaway, Fairfield, Licking, and Union Counties, and the conferences represented by those counties), as well as the College Football and the NFL, primarily.

BIG GAME OF THE WEEK:
Gahanna Lincoln Golden Lions at St. Francis DeSales Stallions
This is a matchup that has been done before. The public school vs. the local suburban Catholic school. It's been done with many schools (Watterson and Upper Arlington, St. Charles/Hartley and Bexley, Ready and Franklin Heights). This will be the first of three such rivalry games for the Stallions of St. Francis DeSales to kickoff the 2011 season.

There is a new sherriff at Chic Harley Field, and his name is Carter. Lewis Carter. After 13 seasons and one playoff appearance, Mike White stepped aside after last season's painful 1-9 season for the Tigers, and Lewis Carter, a former Mifflin player, and arena football player promises to bring back winning football traditions on the Near East Side. The Lewis Carter era begins with a trek down Broad Street to the Hilltop to play the West Cowboys, who are looking for their first division title since 1975.

Licking Heights Hornets at Watkins Memorial Warriors

Special Preview of the Arnold Sports Festival
It is billed as "An Event that Attracts the World". Over 175,000 people and 18,000 athletes from about 80 countries will embark on Columbus, Ohio this weekend for the largest multi-sports event in North America, the 2011 Arnold Sports Festival.
"Last year (at the Winter Olympic Games) in Vancouver, there were 6,600 athletes competing," said Stephanie Lorenz, the promotions director of the Arnold Sports Festival.
"In 1970, Arnold won $500 at Veteran's Memorial, where he met Jim Lormer, and that prize has grown to a half a million dollars, and into the Arnold Sports Festival there is today," Lorenz said.
The Arnold Sports Festival generates approximately $ 42 million in visitor spending for the City of Columbus, and the festival has frown in both attendees and events each year.
"It is because of you that we have the most successful athletic event in the world right here in Columbus, Ohio," said Arnold Schwarzenegger in a clip from the Festival's promotional video.
Among the highlights of the festival is the Strongman competition, which features the ten strongest men in the world carring a thousand pounds up an incline.
New this year to the Arnold Sports Festival is a film festival, which celebrates Schwarzenegger's greatest passion, that of film.
Lorenz added that 25 countries and 60 area high school students submitted movies (of 15 minutes or less) for the first-ever Arnold Film Festival. All of the movies are about sports and athletes.
The Arnold Film Festival will take place at the Arena Grand Movie Theatre in the Arena District. Props from Arnold's movies will be seen at the film festival as well.
Also new this year are the Track and Field Tournament, which will take place on the Ohio State University's campus at the French Field House, and the Hockey Challenge, which will take place across the street from the Arena Grand at the Dispatch Ice Haus.
Daily admission to the festival is $ 15, and does not include special events, such as Party with the Pros or the Ask Arnold Training Seminar.
